Now that winter has arrived, it is a good time to protect your newly planted trees from potential damage that deer and rabbits can cause. In the late fall, male deers rub their antlers on tree trunks in a behavior called rutting. This can cause fatal damage to the outside bark tissue, which will shut off the water and nutrient intake for the tree. Additionally, rabbits love to chew on the tree bark during the winter months. An easy and inexpensive method to stop this is to put corregated drain tile tubbing around the trunks that will serve as a barrier. Slit down one side of the tube, and pry it open so that it will fit over the trunk. Then apply it to your trees, and you’re set!
